How Do You Manage Rugged Android Devices With SOTI MobiControl?
In short
SOTI MobiControl manages rugged Android handhelds from one console. You enrol each device with a QR code or zero-touch, lock it to your business apps, push apps and Zebra firmware updates over the air, share devices between shifts, and fix problems remotely with SOTI XSight, in the cloud or on-premise.
A rugged handheld is a work tool. It scans, picks, counts and confirms deliveries all day, often in the hands of staff who did not set it up.
That is why a fleet of Zebra or Honeywell Android devices needs central management. This guide explains how SOTI MobiControl handles the everyday jobs, and what to decide before you start.
Why do rugged Android fleets need mobile device management?
Without management, each device is configured by hand. Settings drift, apps fall out of date and a lost device is simply lost.
SOTI describes MobiControl as an enterprise mobility management system that shows where your devices are, what they are doing, how they are performing and what security or compliance risks they face. It works across Android, iOS, macOS, Windows and Linux, and with devices from any manufacturer, including Zebra, Honeywell, Samsung and Panasonic.
For a warehouse or a store, the practical result is one console for every handheld, tablet and mobile printer.
How do you enrol new Android handhelds?
Enrolment connects a device to MobiControl so it picks up the right settings and apps. SOTI supports several methods:
- QR code: for Android Enterprise, MobiControl generates a QR code that configures and enrols the device in one step.
- Zero-touch and OEM tools: Android zero-touch enrolment, Samsung KME and Zebra StageNow, which avoid setting up each device by hand.
- Other platforms: Apple DEP and Windows Autopilot cover iOS and Windows devices, according to SOTI’s MDM page.
Decide on the method early. It shapes how new devices arrive at a branch and who has to touch them.
How do you lock handhelds to business apps only?
Most rugged devices run a handful of apps: a picking app, a POS companion, a browser for one internal site. Anything else is a distraction or a risk.
MobiControl’s Lockdown replaces the standard home screen with a custom one that gives access only to the apps and websites you authorise. Staff see a simple screen with the tools for their job, and settings stay out of reach.
Can shift workers share the same devices?
Yes. In many operations, one pool of handhelds serves several shifts.
MobiControl’s Shared Device configuration lets several users share a device and personalises it for each user when they log in. SOTI supports this on Android and iOS. One pool of devices can then serve every shift, and each user still gets their own apps and settings.
How do you keep apps, Android and firmware up to date?
Keeping apps current by hand does not scale past a few devices. MobiControl manages business apps centrally, so a new version reaches every device in a group without anyone collecting them.
Operating system updates matter too. MobiControl supports Zebra LifeGuard over-the-air updates for Zebra devices enrolled as Android Enterprise. The devices must meet Zebra’s requirements and have Zebra Data Services enabled. For Honeywell devices, SOTI describes complete lifecycle management of Honeywell mobile computers.
A sensible routine is to test each update on a few devices first, then release it to the wider fleet.
How do IT staff fix device problems remotely?
When a handheld misbehaves in a branch, the fastest fix is to see the screen. SOTI XSight is SOTI’s support and diagnostics tool. It adds device analytics, real-time alerts, remote control and live text, voice and video chat with the user.
According to SOTI’s remote-control documentation, XSight is the default tool for MobiControl remote control sessions. Zebra Android Enterprise devices need no extra plugin, while work-profile and iOS devices can be viewed but not controlled. XSight needs a MobiControl system to run.
What about mobile printers and custom forms?
Two more SOTI products often join a rugged fleet:
- SOTI Connect manages mobile and industrial printers through their lifecycle, with firmware updates, dashboards, a rules engine and device logs. SOTI lists printer makers including Zebra, SATO, TSC Auto ID, Brother and Epson.
- SOTI Snap builds cross-platform apps for iOS and Android that turn paper forms and checklists into digital ones, including apps that work offline. Snap itself is a cloud service.
When an off-the-shelf app or a Snap form is not enough, we write custom Android apps for Zebra and Honeywell handhelds, and MobiControl can distribute them.
Should you run SOTI in the cloud or on-premise?
SOTI states that the SOTI ONE Platform supports cloud and on-premise deployments. MobiControl Cloud runs as a single-tenant cloud instance, while an on-premise system runs on your own servers.
The choice usually comes down to your IT policy, who will maintain the servers and how your sites connect. It is worth settling before the console is set up, because it affects every later step.
SOTI is widely used. According to its January 2026 press kit, SOTI has more than 17,000 customers in over 180 countries, with over 22 million mobile devices under management.
What should you decide before the console is set up?
A short list of decisions saves rework later:
- Device groups: by branch, by role or by device model. Groups decide which profile and apps each device receives.
- Enrolment method: QR code, zero-touch or an OEM tool, and who performs it.
- The app list: which apps each group needs, and which websites Lockdown should allow.
- Update policy: who approves app and firmware updates, and which devices test them first.
- Support: who staff call when a device fails, and whether XSight remote control is part of the plan.
